Vitamin K2-7 Supplementation Recommendation
For patients who have documented abnormal calcifications on CBCT imaging, there is a high clinical correlation with pain upon palpation and oroneuromyofunctional soft tissue restrictions. As a precaution against further abnormal calcification and as a low risk/high benefit therapeutic intervention based on the scientific literature, Dr. Tenholder has recommends that a Vitamin K2-7 supplement be considered during active growth and craniofacial neurodevelopmental and/or orthodontic therapy.
In children, continuous strain on the ligaments and soft tissue undergoing continual physiologic pressure from the surrounding muscles and nerves may be contributing to the abnormal hardening/calcification of the stylohyoid and/or stylomandibular ligaments as visualized on CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging.

In the last 40 years, researchers have realized that vitamin K2 is responsible for attracting calcium into the bones and teeth and preventing calcification (hardening) of the soft tissues by pulling calcium out of soft tissues, including arteries and veins. Without a sufficient source of K2 in the diet, the calcium that is ingested has a greater likelihood of being deposited in the blood vessels rather than the bone, where we need it the most. This is especially important for children who are actively growing bones and teeth and are also undergoing craniofacial neurodevelopmental and orthodontic therapies.
In the context of orthodontic tooth movement, the production of bone is important to stable treatment outcomes. MK-7 increases bone mineral density and promotes bone quality and strength. Collagen production, and thus, bone quality may be affected by the forms of Vitamin K known as MK-7 and/or MK-4 as it is converted from MK-7.
Since Vitamin K2 cannot be found in sufficient quantities in the average Western diet, supplementation is frequently recommended.
Dr. Tenholder does not have a specific type of Vitamin K2-7 that is required, and any form can be used as long as it is Vitamin K2-7 and not “just” Vitamin K. However, she does recommend a certain product based on her research and personal use.

Instructions for patients currently in ALF Therapy or orthodontic treatment
As an ALF Therapy provider and instructor, Dr. Tenholder is committed to supporting the needs of providers who need assistance in treating complex patients. If patients are interested in becoming a patient in her practice, Dr. Tenholder wants to ensure that the following rules and guidelines are understood.
If a patient is requesting to transfer care from another provider, Dr. Tenholder’s conditions are as follows:
1. The provider must contact Dr. Tenholder for a consultation and be able to provide documentation of the patient’s baseline records, progress assessments and current status within the last 3-4 weeks of treatment
2. Once the provider has done everything possible to address the concerns of the patient and requests Dr. Tenholder to evaluate and treat the patient, she will arrange for the patient to schedule an appointment for evaluation.
3. Once the evaluation is completed, the doctor will determine if she is comfortable in tandem treatment of the patient with the original provider or resume treatment as the sole ALF Therapy provider.
